The local currency is the Arab Emirate Dirham (AED), sometimes abbreviated as Dhs or DH. On the dollar bills, you’ll find both Arabic and English text, which is convenient.

As of now, 1 Dirham is approximately equal to 0.27 USD. Despite this conversion rate, when I calculated expenses for taxis, dining, tours, and accommodation, the costs were on par with, or exceeded, what I might spend in the US. This is particularly true if you’re aiming for a luxury experience, as I did. My trip included high tea at the iconic Burj Al Arab, a stay at a lavish hotel on Dubai Marina, and several private tours.

For currency exchange, you can exchange money upon arrival at Dubai Airport, but we found that the exchange rates at malls were slightly better. Dubai is home to numerous malls, making it easy to find an exchange service. When it comes to credit cards, Mastercard and Visa are widely accepted, while American Express is less common. Our hotel and the Nike store in Dubai Mall were among the few places that accepted AmEx.

Food and Alcohol in Dubai

For local cuisine, try traditional dishes like Shawarma (spiced meat in flatbread), Al Harees (wheat and meat porridge), and Luqaimat (sweet dumplings). For international options, Dubai offers fine dining at places like La Petite Maison (French) and Palladium (Italian). Casual dining includes popular chains such as The Cheesecake Factory and Nando’s. The Dubai Mall’s food court and Global Village are great for diverse food options.

Dubai is known for its lavish Friday brunches, with hotels like Atlantis The Palm offering extravagant spreads.

Regarding alcohol, Dubai has strict regulations. You must be 21 to drink, and alcohol can only be consumed in licensed venues like hotels, bars, and clubs. Some well-known spots include At.mosphere at Burj Khalifa and White Dubai. Duty-free shops at the airport also offer limited alcohol purchases.
